Kobukan Teaches The Following Programs
Shorin-Ryu Karate
A traditional Okinawan style noted for its high stances, quick hand techniques, and low thrusting kicks. Many open-handed forms are the foundation of this effective martial art. The school teaches the historical Matsumura Seito (Orthodox) system of Shorin-Ryu with a direct lineage to its creation in Okinawa in the early 18th century. Emphasis is on practical technique, joint manipulation, nerve strikes, and pressure point fighting.
Kobudo
The art of traditional weapons with instruction in the bo (staff), sai, tonfa, nunchaku, eku (oar), and kama (sickle). Many various weapon forms are presented as the foundation of this comprehensive art. Modern street self-defense techniques using the combat cane are also part of the weapons curriculum.
Hakutsuru White Crane
One of the oldest Okinawan arts as handed down directly from China. A very flowing and powerful art that makes use of internal energy. The original kata are taught in their purest form. The style is known for its rapid hand strikes and effective pressure point techniques. For more information about this powerful art click here.
Splashing Hands Kung Fu
Developed in the 1700's and taught to the guards of the Shaolin Temple. This is an extremely practical, no-nonsense art. It features quick shuffling footwork and low-focused straight leg kicks. Splashing Hands is an extremely contemporary in that it is geared strictly for the streets. We are affiliated with the Little Nine Heaven Internal Kung Fu Association headed by Grandmaster James McNeil. For more information visit www.littlenineheaven.com
Chen Tai Chi
Handed down from generation to generation for over 600 years. Chen routines include kicking, striking, throwing, and seizing techniques. Its goal is to promote good health, to heal or prevent sickness and achieve happiness along with self-defense capability.
Okinawan White Crane
Okinawan White Crane is a self-defense system that originated in China. It was passed down to Okinawans over the centuries via various Chinese instructors who visited and/or lived in Okinawa. The style includes a hand techniques that include nerve attacks, throwing, and joint manipulation.
Various stories surround the history of the development of the White Crane system. One involves an old man who witnessed a fight between a crane and an ape. The man was amazed at how easily the crane avoided and evaded the ape's attack. The crane eventually defeated the ape by striking at its eyes.
The old man meditated on the battle and eventually was able to mimic the cranes movement to form a devastatingly effective fighting system.
Such stories are best understood in modern terms as metaphors or illustrations of the basic principles of the style: quick footwork, rapid arm movements, precise attacks and a combination of soft and hard techniques, all used to defeat superior strength or size.
The system taught at our dojo has it roots in China, but was passed down through the lineage of Bushi Matsumura, the famous Okinawan martial arts master and Royal bodyguard. Other crane forms were also passed down by Gokenki, a Chinese tea merchant who taught the Crane system on Okinawa at the turn of the 19th century. The White Crane system was introduced to our dojo by Chuck Chandler, Master of the Okinawan White Crane. The following kata are presently practiced at our school:
