KYAN SOUTHERN LIGHT KATA
This new groundbreaking video set will focus on the system known as “Light from the South” or “Peace from the South” Kata Intensive series.
These forms were brought from Taiwan to Okinawa from the legendary Chotoku Kyan, a good friend of Hohan Soken. The series were known as the "Southern Light Kata", partially because the originated from the southern islands of Formosa, but mostly because they involved lighting fast footwork and evasion techniques. Hohan Soken and Choto Kyan were such good friends that many contempories state that Kyan intended to accompany Soken to Argentina in in 1920, but at the last minute decided to stay in Okinawa. This turned out to have tragic consquences and Choto Kyan wound up dying of starvation during the fighting during the Battle for Okinawa during World War II.
Upon hearing of his friends death, Soken incorporated these forms into the Matumura System upon his return to Okinawa in 1952.
